Guilt, when it’s working properly, points us toward repair and then releases us.

Scrupulosity doesn’t release. It loops. It questions confessions already made, finds sin in ordinary decisions, and convinces you that no amount of contrition or effort is ever quite enough.

For those deeply committed to their faith, this pattern can feel like devotion. Clinically, it looks much closer to anxiety and often leads to emotional overload and spiritual discouragement. If your relationship with God feels more like a courtroom than a relationship, that’s worth exploring with a professional and spiritual director.
