Research shows that prayer and being part of a faith community are beneficial for our mental health. At the same time, it can be hard to feel comforted and supported when you’re suffering. While prayer can’t replace proper treatment, it may be helpful to focus on prayers that are aimed at providing consolation. These prayers can speak to our suffering hearts, making space for our lived reality and need for help. The goal is to meet our spiritual needs while we strive to meet our psychological, physiological, and emotional needs through other means like therapy.
O Mother of the Word, deliver me from all troubles and afflictions. It is to you that I now come for shelter, to you that I lift my heart and my thoughts.
The assaults of my passions disturb me: they fill my soul with great discouragement. O Maiden preserved from all stain, restore the balance of my soul through the peace of your Son, through the peace of your God!
O you who alone are the Mother of God, you who are good and the Mother of Goodness, take away the disease of my body and soul.
I beseech you, O Virgin : dispel the troubles of my soul, quiet the surge of my despair. Help me who am pressed by incurable ills and distressing passions, for I know that you are a perfect and abundant treasury of healing.
O Mother of God most high : deliver your faithful servants from every kind of trouble. You are joy to the distressed, you are strength to the oppressed, you are food to those who sink into despair. You console all the strangers, you support all the blind, and you come and visit all the sick. You are shelter to the weary, you are comfort to the crushed, you are heavenly assistance to the orphans. Hasten, O immaculate one, and save your faithful servants! In you is my hope, place me under the wings of your protection.
