Summoning the courage to talk openly about mental health is an important aspect of supporting each other’s health and wellness. Unfortunately, the stigma around mental health is still present within our families, communities and society at large. This barrier can lead to suffering in silence which only increases the intensity of the struggle. Without accessing the help we need, we risk placing ourselves in danger and unintentionally impacting those around us. While it can be scary to take that first step or begin having open conversations, this may prevent a lifetime of suffering for both you and your loved ones.
It is important to remember that the tone of these conversations should be soft and tender to honor the vulnerability and potential shame associated with mental health. The goal is to create safety to have those open and honest conversations. Do not presume you know or understand what the other person is going through or tell them what to do. Simply offering them a safe place to process their experience and explore options for getting help can be incredibly relieving and supportive.
